Info: Eastbourne's Italian Garden, ideal for picnics, sheltered lawned garden.

The Italian Gardens in Eastbourne are hidden away below Helen Gardens at Holywell end of the seafront (the western end of Eastbourne seafront, 2 kilometers south west of Eastbourne’s Victorian pier). This sheltered location in Eastbourne with its secluded lawned garden sits in a wooded amphitheatre carved out of the cliff, formerly a chalk quarry.

The secluded setting of the Italian Gardens provides shade on a hot day and creates the impression of a “Secret Garden” and with its central lawned area, seasonal colours from the climbing roses and the close proximity to the beach it makes a charming place for a picnic. Nearby you can enjoy the special Millennium in Bloom flower bed which was designed by local school children.

The Council converted the quarry into these beautiful Gardens in the winter of 1904/05 after quarrying ceased due to the excavations polluting a nearby pure water spring, a spring essential for Eastbourne’s water supply.

The Italian Gardens also provide a beautiful setting for open air theatre in Midsummer

Access is on well surfaced paths or by seasonal Dotto train.  Please note that some of the pathways down to Eastbourne’s Italian Gardens area are quite steep, please use the access from the promenade for ease.
